COVID-19 (Coronavirus) update

24th March 2020

We find ourselves in very uncertain times due to COVID-19 (Coronavirus). As an organisation we have been staying up to date on the latest developments and taking actions to keep our clients, staff and community safe.

We are following guidelines from the Federal and State Governments and the Government’s Health Authorities. We will continue to update you as new information becomes available and keep you informed of the decisions and actions we are taking as a business.

We want to reassure you that it is business as usual at the MS Society, and the health and well being of people with MS continues to be our priority. We are here to support you and to deliver services to our MS clients, with some new protocols and precautionary measures in place.

Group activities postponed

We have paused our group activities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our clients and staff. This includes:

  • Hillcrest gym classes
  • exercise and hydrotherapy groups
  • education sessions and workshops.

Clients who have registered or regularly attend these sessions have been contacted. We are currently looking at alternative ways to provide these services so clients can participate from home.

Our services

Support Coordination, Nursing, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy services are still available, but where possible we are limiting face-to-face contact with MS clients. During this time, we are exploring a range of other ways to connect with you, including teleconferencing and videoconferencing so you can continue to meet with MS staff one-on-one.

When meeting face-to-face, we are taking hygiene very seriously. Please make sure you let us know if you are feeling unwell. We will be calling prior to face-to-face meetings to ensure if it safe to enter your home.

Our MS Assist line continues to operate and is the best way to connect with our services team.

NDIS

As of Tuesday 24 March, all NDIS Offices will be closed to the public. Services are being provided via phone, email and webchat. More information about support for NDIS participants in response to COVID-19 can be found on the NDIS website. NDIS participants should:

  • phone 1800 800 110 if they need to talk to a planner, make changes to their plans or are having difficulty getting services due to COVID-19
  • email enquiries@ndis.gov.au with any questions.
  • use the webchat on the contact page of the NDIS website.

How can you help?

In this uncertain time, it’s incredibly important that we all do our bit to get through this.

  • If you can, please stay home. If you have recently returned from overseas, have come into contact with someone with COVID-19 or are showing flu like symptoms please do not come into the MS Society head office. If you have a face-to-face meeting scheduled with an MS staff member, please let us know and we will connect with you over the phone.
  • Practice social distancing by keeping 1.5 metres between yourself and others.
  • Good hygiene is incredibly important to stop the spread of Coronavirus. Try to follow these good hygiene habits.

Please remember, you are not alone. We are all in this together. The MS Society team is here to support you. Please contact MS Assist on 1800 812 311 to speak with an MS staff member.
