Farewell from Tim Ryan

10th August 2022

Having led the MS Society SA & NT as our CEO, we said farewell to Tim Ryan at the end of July. Tim was appointed to the role by our Board to drive a new strategic direction for the Society. They wanted to reinvigorate our brand ensuring that our clients remain at the centre of everything we do, modernise the Society’s technological systems and solutions, and embed a supportive and inclusive internal culture.

The Society has seen great transformative change under Tim’s dedicated leadership and we are very sad to see him go. We do however welcome our next steps in our future and look forward to continuing to grow and improve under new leadership, and ideas.

Tim shares some of his parting thoughts with us below.

When I think back on my time here at the MS Society SA & NT, two things stand out as highlights; our community – the people with MS who we serve – and our team – the people at the MS Society and Multiple Solutions who are dedicated to serving our community.

I was humbled to meet so many people living with Multiple Sclerosis and to listen to their extraordinary stories. Yet, at the same time, it struck me that their stories of challenges living with MS are told in the entirely ‘ordinary’ context of their every-day lives. “I’m not MS” one person told me, ‘I’m John’, or ‘I’m a Mum or Dad, or a grandparent, partner, employee, gardener, accountant, business owner, volunteer…’ This perspective reminded me that MS can strike anyone at almost any time. And that the impact of an MS diagnosis is far reaching.

It has been my privilege to get to know some of you and lead a team who work passionately to help you.

In this context, I want to recognise the professionalism, dedication and effort of the team of people who work tirelessly for the MS Society, the voluntary Board, and the broader teams within the Society.

These teams are focussed on ensuring the Society thrives, both through Multiple Solutions which works to help people find and maintain meaningful employment, and through the MS Society helping people living with MS, live well. It has given me great pride and pleasure to work with them.

While it was a difficult decision to leave the MS Society SA & NT, I am confident that I leave the Society in good shape, and in strong hands. Emma Hinchey will lead the organisation as Interim CEO to provide the Board with adequate time to complete a successful recruitment process for our new executive leader. Emma is an experienced advisor to disability providers in South Australia through her role as a CEO Advisor with The CEO Centre, and having been CFO and CEO of Minda Inc and Community Support Inc respectively.

I will continue to advocate for the Society, and for people living with MS in our broader community. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead such a terrific organisation, and for the opportunities to meet so many inspiring people.

Tim Ryan.
