Run with Olivia in the City-Bay

29th August 2019

Olivia has ran in the Westpac City-Bay Fun Run every year since she was in primary school. This year, since connecting with the MS Society, she is running and fundraising for Team MS.

“It was pretty scary to be honest; it’s certainly not something I was expecting. When I lost the vision that was a frightening moment,” Olivia says about her diagnosis.

Olivia was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2016 after gradually losing her vision in one eye while on holiday. “My neurologist put me in touch with the MS Society after my first visit. The support we’ve found from the MS Society has been amazing,” Olivia says.

“One of the nurses came out to our house and just spoke about diagnosis, treatment options and what to expect from here on in.”

With symptoms like fatigue, pins and needles, and balance and coordination problems, Olivia has modified her diet, exercise and lifestyle to manage her MS symptoms.

“I used to play a lot of netball, but I just find my coordination and my balance is not great anymore. So I’ve had to stop that and just focus more on weight bearing and resistance exercise. Which doesn’t hurt my body as much,” Olivia says.

Olivia is excited to take part in the City-Bay for another year! While she’s not sure if she’ll be able to run the full 12 kilometres, she’s eager to get out there and enjoy the amazing atmosphere of the event, while supporting the MS Society.

“The support that I’m continuously offered from the MS Society is amazing and very well received, so anything that I can do to help, I’m happy to help with,” Olivia says.
